ECONOLOGY : Ecology at an economic price

Soap nuts

Price 13.50€ the kilo VAT included

One kilo of nuts allows to make 100 washings in a machine, which is 6 months of washing for a family of three people.

Soap nut, econologic detergent:

Soap nuts are the fruits of a tree which growths in India and in Nepal. The nut shells contain saponin whose action is the same one as soap. The washing nuts are an effective alternative to detergents, soaps, shampoos, washing products for the ground or for the windows, shampoo for dogs... and in premium, nature thanks.

Some uses:

- Detergent for laundry and dishes.

- Shampoo (preventing dandruff).

- Shampoo for animals, (leaves soft and silky hair).

- Cleaning for ground and toilettes with bactericidal and fungicide properties.

- Cleaning for windows.

- Liquid soap to wash the dishes by hand.

- Soap to wash the car.

- Liquid soap for the body and the hands.

- Powerful repelant for parasites such as lice.

- Biological Insecticide for plants, also used against the plant louses.

- Cleaning for jewels.

- Anallergic soap for children and people having a sensitive skin.

- The use of washing nuts is much more economic than the use of detergents.

- One kilo of nuts allows to make 100 washings in a machine, which is 6 months of washing for a family of three people.

No more need of softeners because the linen stays soft and the dishes keeps its brilliance. Even for delicate linen the nuts preserve the colours and fabrics. The soap nuts are ecological and preserve the environment. This alternate detergent is 100% biodegradable, because once the nuts are worn out (at the end of four washings they become hard and dry, sign that there is no more saponin) it is possible to give them other uses. It is only then that they can go to composting.

Instructions for washing machines or dishwashers:

Put 6 or 7 halves of soap nuts in a cotton bag or in an old sock and  put them in the drum of the washing machine, in the middle of the linen. Don't add any softeners because the linen will be very soft. As the odour of nuts is neutral for those who like the scented linen it is possible to add some drops of ethereal oil in the bag containing the nuts. For the dishwasher just place the nuts in the bag and in  the fork and spoon container. The same nuts are to be used for 4 washings.

Caution: the nuts have their full potential from 30º or 40º degrees. To wash with cold water for the wool, be advised to start the washing program, then to stop the machine, to let soak a few hours so that the saponin can be released out of cold water, then to continue washing normally.

Once the nut bag has been opened, it is appropriate to store them in carton box, closed so that they do not take moisture. Otherwise with moisture they become sticky and difficult to manipulate. It is recommended to add in box some drops of ethereal oil.

Instructions for other uses:

The nuts used will live a second life. Once used they become dry and hard, (sign that there is no more saponin). Getting out of the washing machine put them to dry otherwise as they do not contain any more saponin to preserve them they would moist. For that preserve them dry while waiting to make the decoction.

Then put in a fabric 50g of sop nuts (whole or mixed), in one litre of water boil them during 10 minutes. Take care to ventilate the room because the odour irritates the throat. The best is to have them boiled 5 minutes, to let them cool and to boil again 5 minutes. Do not cover the pan completely because there is a risk of overflow with the foam. Then let cool. Filter the mixture and to add some ethereal oils according to the use, and then put in the refrigerator. You now have shampoo,  liquid soap, washing product for your house etc.... as mentioned at the top of the page. Now you can add what remains of nuts in the compost.

This mixture can be preserved 15 days.
